So what's this Aussie Slang
site all about?

Well just let me ramble for a bit and I will tell you the story.

I guess it started because I was born and bred in Australia, and I am proud of my country as any person would be of their country of birth.

Being born in Australia I was always aware that we have our own way of saying things, but didn't realise just how much it permeated our everyday lives until I lived in other countries and cultures.

I have lived overseas twice, once in Hong Kong, and the second time in Mainland China. I have been interested in things Chinese since University days, so both experiences were a bit of a buzz.

Whilst living in China, I had the very great privilege of teaching Business Management courses and Conversational English. Teaching English really makes you think about what you say, and how you say it, and why you say it.  And teaching a little bit of Aussie Slang to Chinese students was, to say the least, often very confusing for my students, but always a lot of fun.

Upon returning to Australia after 12 months abroad, or as we say, overseas, I was suddenly hit again with the local lingo, and it was then that I realised just how much we use slang in our every day life, even in the News Reports of all places, and also how strange it must sound to other people.

So this site is by way of explaining why we say the things we say in Australia, and what they mean.

There is a fairly comprehensive collection of terms in the Dictionary, just over 600 as of 26th January 2001 (Australia Day - Yea!) and the plan is to expand on this on an ongoing basis.

Researching into Aussie Slang also led me to numerous other sites about other forms of slang or dialects. These are presented in the Global Slang & Dialect Directory.

So all in all, I hope you have as much fun reading the site as I have had putting it together; but remember, it ain't finished yet.

Onya Mate!
